TEAM MARIA Alumni? How long? What leg of the race?
Yes, I did the 35 mile / Sand Dollar Leg last year. I was not ready! Half of it is up-hill!
Why did you join TEAM MARIA?
Last year I used this race to help me get in shape. I joined at the Governor’s Conference on Women. Doing the ride was such a high that I signed up right at the finish line to come back in 2011.
Why is the Best Buddies program, and its mission, so important?
Dignity and empowerment go hand in hand. Through Best Buddies, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are given opportunities to develop in relationships, education and job placement. The resources provided by this program reach into the lives of people with IDD, and the opportunity to be a part of this program reaches into the hearts of those who support the mission.
What motivates you to participate in the Best Buddies Challenge?
The combination of philanthropy and personal connection is missing from many organizations. The Best Buddies Challenge creates an amazing bond between participants! I made friends for life on my ride last year. The fundraising is great fun too. It’s amazing to see how many of my friends and family will pay to see me riding on the edge of a cliff! I tell them all that 60 is the new 40!

Anything else you would like to share?
I have 10 grandkids. Doing the Best Buddies Challenge is a terrific way to start a conversation and raise awareness with them. I’ve shared my stories about Best Buddies and got all the kids to agree to drop the ‘R’ word from their vocabularies and to encourage their friends to do the same.
